Mohammad Shami is an Indian international cricketer who bowls right-arm fast bowling.  Shami, who plays for Bengal in domestic cricket, plays for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mohammed Shami plays for India in all three formats of the game and is one of the best bowlers in the cricket world. Shami, who bowls at a speed of 145 kilometers per hour, is also known as a reverse swing expert. 

Mohammad Shami was born on 3 September 1990 in Sahaspur village of Amroh, Uttar Pradesh. His full name is Mohammad Shami Ahmed. Shami’s father Tausif Ali Ahmed was a farmer and used to bowl fast in his time. His mother’s name is Anjum Ara. Mohammed Shami has four siblings and all of them wanted to become a fast bowler in their early days, but Shami became the only player to do so.  Mohammed Shami completed his primary education from Amroha Primary School. Shami is not very educated, he studied only till 10th class, because his entire focus was on cricket. 

Early cricket career of Mohammed Shami

Born in Uttar Pradesh, Mohammed Shami could not be selected in his state’s Under-19 team, after which on the advice of coach Badruddin Siddiqui, Shami went to Kolkata and started playing for Dalhousie Athletic Club. Where Devvrat Das, former assistant secretary of Bengal Cricket Association, noticed him and sent Shami to Mohun Bagan Club.

Under the supervision of former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly at Mohun Bagan Club, Shami worked hard in the nets and took more than 40 wickets for the Town Club in the Kolkata League. After which he soon got a chance to play in the Bengal Ranji team.

Mohammed Shami started his domestic cricket career in October 2010. While playing for Bengal in the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy, Shami took 3 wickets against Assam. After this, on 10 February 2011, Shami made his List-A cricket debut against Odisha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

After this, in the 2014 IPL season, Delhi Daredevils bought Mohammed Shami for Rs 4.25 crore. That season Shami played 12 matches and took 7 wickets.

Delhi Daredevils retained him for the 2015 season as well. He was again bought by Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL auction. ODI cricket

Due to his excellent performance in domestic cricket, Mohammed Shami made a place in the Indian team in 2013.  Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan on 6 January 2013 in Delhi. He performed brilliantly in his first match and also took one wicket for 23 runs in 9 overs.

In which he bowled four maiden overs. In 2014, Shami took 11 wickets at an average of 28.72 in a series against New Zealand. Shami became the second Indian bowler to take the fastest 50 ODI wickets in the 2014 Asia Cup. In the same year he was selected in ICC’s ODI XI. 

After this, Shami performed brilliantly in the 2015 World Cup and came into limelight by taking a total of 17 wickets.  However, due to knee fracture, Shami remained out of Indian cricket for a long time.  After this he made his last comeback on 2 July 2017 against West Indies.

Apart from this, Shami scored his first Test half-century against England at Trent Bridge. Shami, while partnering with Jasprit Bumrah, made the highest score of his career with an unbeaten inning of 56 runs.

Mohammed Shami played his first T20 International match against Pakistan on 21 March 2014. In which he took his first wicket in the form of Umar Akmal by giving 31 runs in 4 overs.  After this, Shami played another match against England and took three important wickets. Controversies related to Mohammad Shami

 Domestic violence and abuse allegations

In March 2018, an FIR was lodged against Mohammad Shami and his family members by his wife Hasin Jahan under sections 498 A, 323, 307, 376, 506, 328, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, citing domestic violence and adultery. Shami’s elder brother was accused of rape.

While Shami was accused of crimes related to domestic violence, attempt to murder, poisoning and criminal intimidation. Shami denied all the allegations and claimed that it was a conspiracy and was planted to distract him from cricket. Following these allegations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed Shami from its national contract list. His wife also claimed that Shami was involved in match fixing. It was investigated by the BCCI-run anti-corruption unit and on March 22, the board cleared Shami of corruption charges and reinstated his national contract.

On 2 September 2019, an Alipore court issued an arrest warrant against Shami on domestic violence charges, giving him 15 days to present himself after returning to India.
