There has been no official statement from the Government of Bangladesh regarding the ban imposed on these social media apps, although Times of India and Global Eyes have given information about the social media ban in their reports.
Ban imposed on these apps
According to the report of Times of India, the government in Bangladesh has temporarily banned the use of popular social media apps including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and WhatsApp. Earlier on Friday, information about this ban was given by Global Eyes News through its official X account.
Global Eyes report also states that a temporary ban has been imposed on social media sites across the country since Friday.
The government has limited the network of Meta platform after 12 noon and the internet speed has also been slowed down so that social media cannot be used even using VPN.
Ban was imposed last month also
Protests were started again in Bangladesh on Friday (2 August) against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government. Earlier, these demonstrations were also held last month, after which curfew was imposed.
Last month too, Instagram and Facebook were banned and a decision was taken to ban the internet and social sites. Later, after the Supreme Court’s decision on reservation quota, the matter calmed down a bit, after which protests started again.
