ISLAMABAD: Olympic javelin throw gold medalist Arshad Nadeem on Tuesday received a total prize money of Rs 25 crore ($8 lakh 97 thousand) as Pakistan continued to celebrate his record-breaking performance at the Paris Games. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a compensation of Rs 15 crore ($5 lakh 38 thousand) to the star athlete at a special function organized in Nadeem’s honor in Islamabad.
Sharif made this announcement hours after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited Nadeem’s house in a village in Mian Channu district and handed him a check of Rs 10 crore ($3 lakh 59 thousand). Maryam also handed him the keys of a new car which has the special registration number ‘PAK 92.97’ which refers to Nadeem’s throw of 92.97 meters in Paris which is an Olympic record. Nadeem’s coach Salman Iqbal Butt was also given Rs 50 lakh ($18 thousand).
While announcing the reward money for Nadeem, Sharif said, ‘You have doubled the happiness of 25 crore Pakistanis because we will also celebrate our Independence Day tomorrow.’ He said, ‘Today every Pakistani is happy and the morale of the entire country has skyrocketed. Nadeem’s father is a daily wage labourer. Nadeem said on Tuesday, ‘This feeling is very good. I hope to stay fit and break the world record one day.’ Last Thursday, Nadeem gave the whole of Pakistan a reason to celebrate when his throw easily surpassed the previous Olympic record of 90.57 meters set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen in 2008.
This was well ahead of the effort of Tokyo Games champion Neeraj Chopra of India, who won the silver medal with his season’s best of 89.45 metres. Maryam said in a statement, ‘Arshad Nadeem has given unprecedented happiness to the country.’ Nadeem won Pakistan’s first Olympic gold in 40 years. Earlier, the men’s hockey team had won the gold medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Pakistan’s previous Olympic medal was a hockey bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Maryam said in her post on ‘X’, ‘The blessings of parents take a person to great heights.’
